Project deadline is March 31. Today is February 15. How many working days do you have? The calendar shows 44 days — but that includes weekends. And possibly some holidays.
Working day calculations matter for project timelines, legal deadlines, payroll periods, and shipping estimates. Here's how to do them correctly.
The Basic Formula
Working days = Total calendar days - Weekends - Public holidays
For February 15 to March 31 (non-leap year):
- Total calendar days: 44
- Weekends (Sat + Sun): 12 days (6 weekends)
- Calendar days minus weekends: 32 working days
- Minus public holidays in the period: depends on location
Counting Weekends
To count weekend days between two dates:
- Find the total number of weeks: 44 days ÷ 7 = 6.28 weeks
- Complete weeks contain 2 weekend days each: 6 × 2 = 12
- Check the remaining days for additional weekend days
A more precise approach: count the number of Saturdays and Sundays between the dates. Most date calculators do this automatically.
Public Holidays
Public holidays that fall on weekdays reduce working days. The challenge: holidays vary by:
- Country (US vs. UK vs. Australia have different holidays)
- State/region (some US states have additional holidays)
- Industry (banking holidays differ from general public holidays)
- Company policy (some companies observe floating holidays)
For precise working day counts, you need to know which specific holidays apply to your situation.
Common Applications
Project planning: "This task takes 10 working days" — knowing your working day count helps set realistic deadlines.
Legal deadlines: Many court filings and legal notices are specified in "business days." Missing a deadline because you counted calendar days can have serious consequences.
Payroll: Bi-weekly and semi-monthly payroll periods require accurate working day counts for hourly employees.
Shipping and logistics: "Ships in 5-7 business days" — customers and businesses need to calculate expected delivery dates.
Notice periods: Employment contracts often specify notice periods in working days.
