How to Calculate Percentage of a Number

To find X% of Y: multiply Y by X and divide by 100. For example, 15% of $89.99 restaurant bill = (15 × 89.99) ÷ 100 = $13.50 tip. This is the most common percentage calculation for discounts, tips, commissions, and tax calculations.

Percentage Change vs Percentage Difference

These are frequently confused. Percentage change is directional — from a base value to a new value. If a stock goes from $50 to $60, the percentage change is +20%. Percentage difference is symmetric — it measures the relative difference between two values without implying direction. The difference between $50 and $60 is 18.18% (using the average as denominator). Use change for before/after comparisons and difference for comparing two independent values.

Percentage Calculator for Grades and Marks

To calculate your grade percentage: (marks obtained ÷ total marks) × 100. Scoring 87 out of 120 = (87 ÷ 120) × 100 = 72.5%. Most grading scales use: 90%+ = A, 80-89% = B, 70-79% = C, 60-69% = D, below 60% = F (US standard).
