How to Calculate Your Exact Age in Years, Months, and Days

Most people know their age in years. But how old are you exactly — in months? In days? In hours?

It sounds like a simple math problem. Subtract your birth date from today. Done.

Except it's not that simple. Months have different lengths. Leap years exist. And "age" means slightly different things depending on what you're calculating for.

The Basic Age Calculation

To find your age in completed years, you need two pieces of information:

• Your date of birth (day, month, year)
• Today's date (or the date you want to calculate age as of)

The formula looks simple: Current Year − Birth Year = Age

But this only works if your birthday has already passed this year. If your birthday is later in the year, you subtract one more.

Example: Born June 15, 1990. Today is March 10, 2026.

2026 − 1990 = 36. But your birthday hasn't happened yet in 2026, so your actual age is 35.

Calculating Age in Months

To get your exact age in months:

1. Calculate complete years first
2. Count complete months since your last birthday
3. Add them together

Born: June 15, 1990. Today: March 10, 2026.

Complete years: 35 (birthday hasn't passed in 2026 yet)

Months since last birthday (June 15, 2025 to March 10, 2026): July, August, September, October, November, December, January, February = 8 complete months

Total age: 35 years and 8 months = 428 months

Calculating Age in Days

Age in days is where most people give up doing mental math. The complication: months have 28, 29, 30, or 31 days, and leap years add an extra day every 4 years.

The most reliable method: count the total days between your birth date and today.

For our example (June 15, 1990 to March 10, 2026):

• That's 35 years, 8 months, and 24 days
• In total days: approximately 12,961 days
• Which includes 9 leap years between 1990 and 2026

Why Leap Years Matter

A leap year adds February 29 to the calendar, making that year 366 days instead of 365. Between any two dates spanning multiple years, you need to account for every leap year in between.

Leap years occur when:

• The year is divisible by 4 (2024, 2028, 2032...)
• Exception: century years must be divisible by 400
• So 1900 was NOT a leap year, but 2000 WAS

For someone born in 1990 calculating age in 2026, the leap years in between are: 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024 — that's 9 extra days to account for.

What About February 29 Birthdays?

People born on February 29 (leap day babies) have a birthday that only appears on the calendar every 4 years. How old are they?

Legally and practically, most countries recognize March 1 as the official birthday in non-leap years. Some recognize February 28. It depends on jurisdiction.

For age calculation purposes, a person born February 29, 2000 would turn 26 on March 1, 2026 (or February 28, 2026, depending on convention).

Age Calculation in Different Cultures

Not every culture counts age the same way Western convention does.

East Asian age reckoning: In traditional Korean, Chinese, and Vietnamese systems, a person is considered 1 year old at birth (the time in the womb counts). Age then increases on New Year's Day, not the birthday. A baby born on December 31 would be 2 years old the next day by this system.

South Korea officially abolished the traditional age system in 2023, standardizing to the international method. But the cultural habit runs deep.

The international standard (used in most of the world): Age is 0 at birth and increases by 1 on each birthday anniversary.
