How to Calculate Your Final Grade: A Step-by-Step Guide

Midterm is over. You got a 74. Your quiz average is 88. Your homework average is 95. What's your current grade?

The answer depends on how much each category counts — and most students don't know how to calculate this correctly. Here's how grade calculation actually works.

Simple Average vs. Weighted Average

Most students assume their grade is the average of all their scores. It's not.

A simple average treats every score equally. A weighted average gives different importance to different categories — and almost every class uses weighted averages.

Simple average (wrong method):

(74 + 88 + 95) ÷ 3 = 85.7%

Weighted average (correct method):

If midterm = 40%, quizzes = 30%, homework = 30%:

(74 × 0.40) + (88 × 0.30) + (95 × 0.30)

= 29.6 + 26.4 + 28.5 = 84.5%

The difference is small here, but with extreme scores in heavily weighted categories, it can be significant.

Finding Your Syllabus Weights

Your course syllabus shows the grade breakdown. Common structures:

CategoryWeight
Homework/Assignments20%
Quizzes15%
Midterm Exam25%
Final Exam30%
Participation10%
Total100%

Always check your specific course syllabus — weights vary enormously between courses and instructors.

Calculating Your Current Grade Step by Step

Step 1: List each grade category with its weight.

Step 2: Calculate your average score in each category.

Step 3: Multiply each average by its weight (as a decimal).

Step 4: Add all the weighted scores together.

Example:

  • Homework: avg 92% × 0.20 = 18.4
  • Quizzes: avg 85% × 0.15 = 12.75
  • Midterm: 78% × 0.25 = 19.5
  • Participation: 100% × 0.10 = 10.0
  • Final exam: Not yet taken (0% × 0.30 = 0)

Current weighted score: 18.4 + 12.75 + 19.5 + 10.0 = 60.65

Out of possible points so far: 20 + 15 + 25 + 10 = 70%

Current grade: 60.65 ÷ 0.70 = 86.6%

What Score Do You Need on the Final?

To find what you need on the final exam to reach a target grade:

Required final score = (Target grade - Current weighted score) ÷ Final exam weight

If you want an 85% final grade and your current weighted score is 60.65%:

Required final = (0.85 - 0.6065) ÷ 0.30 = 0.2435 ÷ 0.30 = 81.2%

You need at least an 81.2% on the final to finish with an 85% in the course.

When Categories Have Different Point Values

Some courses use total points rather than percentages. Each assignment has a point value and your grade is total points earned ÷ total points possible.

Example: 850 points earned out of 1000 total = 85%

This is actually simpler to calculate — just keep a running total of points earned and points possible.
