What day of the week were you born? What day did a particular historical event fall on? What day of the week will your birthday fall on next year?

There's a mathematical formula for determining the day of the week for any date — and it works for any date in the Gregorian calendar.

The Doomsday Algorithm

The most well-known method is the Doomsday Algorithm, developed by mathematician John Conway. It's based on the fact that certain dates always fall on the same day of the week within any given year.

These "doomsday" dates include: 4/4, 6/6, 8/8, 10/10, 12/12, and the last day of February. They all fall on the same day of the week within a given year — the "doomsday" for that year.

Once you know the doomsday for a year, you can calculate any date's day of the week relative to it.

For 2026, the doomsday is Wednesday. This means 4/4/2026, 6/6/2026, 8/8/2026, 10/10/2026, and 12/12/2026 all fall on Wednesday.

Finding the Day of the Week: Simplified Method

For a quick calculation using Zeller's Congruence (simplified):

1. Take the last two digits of the year
2. Divide by 4 (take the floor)
3. Add the day of month
4. Add the month code (Jan=1, Feb=4, Mar=4, Apr=0, May=2, Jun=5, Jul=0, Aug=3, Sep=6, Oct=1, Nov=4, Dec=6)
5. For January and February, use the previous year
6. Add the century code (1700s=4, 1800s=2, 1900s=0, 2000s=6)
7. Find the remainder when dividing by 7
8. 0=Sunday, 1=Monday, 2=Tuesday, 3=Wednesday, 4=Thursday, 5=Friday, 6=Saturday
