Finals week is approaching and the question every student asks: what do I need on this exam to get the grade I want?
The answer requires a simple formula — and knowing it ahead of time lets you plan how much to study and manage your stress realistically.
The Formula
Required final exam score = (Target grade - Current grade × (1 - Final weight)) ÷ Final weight
Or more simply: how much you still need to earn ÷ how much the final is worth
Example 1: You Need to Pass (60%)
Current grade: 55%. Final exam worth: 40%.
Target grade: 60%
Required score = (0.60 - 0.55 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40
= (0.60 - 0.33) ÷ 0.40
= 0.27 ÷ 0.40 = 67.5%
You need a 67.5% on the final to pass the course.
Example 2: You Want an A (90%)
Current grade: 87%. Final exam worth: 25%.
Required score = (0.90 - 0.87 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25
= (0.90 - 0.6525) ÷ 0.25
= 0.2475 ÷ 0.25 = 99%
You need a 99% on the final to reach 90%. That's extremely difficult — you might want to adjust your target to 89% (B+) and see what that requires.
When the Required Score Exceeds 100%
If the formula returns a number above 100%, the target grade is mathematically impossible regardless of your final exam performance.
Example: Current grade 45%, final worth 30%, target grade 70%.
Required = (0.70 - 0.45 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (0.70 - 0.315) ÷ 0.30 = 128%
A 128% is impossible. You need to either:
- Adjust your target to something achievable
- Check if extra credit opportunities exist
- Speak with your instructor about your situation
What If You Can Afford to Skip the Final?
If your current grade is already high and the final is worth relatively little, calculate whether even a poor final score keeps you at your target:
Minimum final scenario: What grade do you get if you score 0% on the final?
Grade with 0% final = Current grade × (1 - Final weight)
Current grade 95%, final worth 20%: 0.95 × 0.80 = 76%. Even a zero on the final gives you a 76% — a C. You still need to take it, but the pressure is lower.
Common Final Exam Weights
- Low-stakes: 15–20% (used in courses with many assessments)
- Standard: 25–30% (most common)
- High-stakes: 40–50% (some graduate courses, professional exams)
- Cumulative only: 100% (some courses grade only on the final)
